hack #5: icj-lock

Prāna Fusion Nervous System Hack #5 is called ‘icj-Lock’ or ‘Maha Bandha’.

All energy must travel from your brain stem through your spinal cord or vagus nerve to be utilized in the body. This makes these two pathways extremely important for Prāna Fusion, as we can’t energize body parts without them.

What we need to do is to get these pathway free and clear of all obstacles so that energy can flow properly through you.

The yogis have figured out some effective methods for unclogging these lines — they call them the bandhas, or energetic locks, and there are three of them:

  1. Mula bandha (root lock)
  2. Uddiyana bandha (upward flying lock)
  3. Jalandhara bandha (throat lock)

When all three of these locks are activated at once, it is called maha bandha, or “the great lock.”

Let me go through each bandha individually to explain how it gets activated.

Mula Bandha (i-Lock)

Mula bandha — aka root lock — is often translated to mean “engaging your pelvic floor”, but this is not true. Mula bandha is not your pelvic floor, though it shares a similar physical location and very often gets activated alongside it. Instead, it is possible — and indeed preferred — to engage your mula bandha while keeping your pelvic floor muscles relaxed (explained in the practice video).

root lock vs. pelvic floor squeeze

This is why I say i-Lock instead of root lock. ‘Root’ can get misinterpreted by people, whereas lowercase ‘i’ has no concrete associations attached to it.

That said, it is helpful to engage your pelvic floor muscles while first learning to practice this technique. After that you can subtly let them go with a belly breath (while simultaneously maintaining your focus of upward energy.)

Interestingly, if you squeeze your ‘i-Lock’ correctly, energy will rocket up your spine, blow past your brain stem, and explode in an incredible flurry of orgasmic colors and sensations in the center of your brain. This is also known as an “implosive orgasm” or “Kundalini”.

It’s a wild and beautiful experience that is well-worth seeking.

And hence the lowercase i in ‘i-Lock’. The tiny dot hovering above the body of the i symbolically represents your pineal gland — the important, pea-sized endocrine gland in the middle of your skull that gets bombarded with this “Kundalini” energy and induces the “flurry of orgasmic colors and sensations”.

Uddiyana Bandha (c-Lock)

Imagine you have a garden hose directly connected to an abundant reservoir, meaning water is flowing through it effortlessly and incessantly. Woohoo!

Now what happens when you step on that garden hose? Well — though it’s technically still connected to its source — water will trickle instead of cascade. Oh no!

This is a great metaphor for what can happen in your body.

A tube that is bent or restricted in any way will have less substance moving through it, or will require a lot more pressure to get things flowing properly. If you have fully dilated pipes, on the other hand, you won’t need almost any pump system for free-flow to occur; it will happen without any extra help.

Ideally, your spinal cord exists like this — as a kink-free cord from bottom to top. That means zero blockages from your pineal gland, pituitary gland and medulla oblongata all the way down to your pelvic floor, anus and gonads.

Realistically, due to the physical and emotional traumas you’ve incurred in this and prior lifetimes, it’s probably not very kink-free. Instead the more likely scenario is that it’s currently a knotted mess of tangled wires and laggy connections.

This is where ‘c-Lock’ comes in handy. It is phenomenal for improving your posture — aka straightening out your spine — so that energy can circulate more easily.

The technique is simple: just level your pelvis by drawing your belly button backwards, lengthen your spine, and slightly drop your chin. Altogether, this motion will create a c-shaped energy curve in your torso.

Jalandhara Bandha (j-Lock)

The neck tends to get super cramped in everyday life — it’s where a majority of people’s tension manifests.

That said, because (yet again) tension automatically implies a lack of energy flow, most people have a very low vibration in their neck, jaw and head.

Jalandhara bandha, or j-lock, can remedy this.

This technique is a bit complex to perform correctly, as there are many different parts. So to keep it short, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Imagine a string pulling the top of your head (soft spot as a baby) up towards the ceiling.
  2. Drop your chin by visualizing your chin and chest being connected by a golden rope (so that it feels like you are giving yourself a double chin).
  3. The chin dropping down should correspond with the back of your neck getting really long.
  4. Place your tongue on the roof of your mouth (as though you were about to vocalize the sound “ng”: going, tongue, mango).
  5. Close your lips, and slightly separate your teeth (this is also called “mewing”, if you want to look it up).
  6. Move your ears backwards in space so that your sinuses dilate.
  7. Turn your eyes up and in-between your eyebrows (the tiny dot hovering above the body of the j again symbolizing the pineal gland).
  8. Imagine the entire skull expanding in volume, blowing up like a big ol’ balloon.
  9. Put a slight smile on your face, as this relaxes your cheeks and lifts the face further.

Maha Bandha (icj-Lock)

Combined, the three of these techniques are a powerful way to get energy flowing through your body, and to massively strengthen your core. Every posture we take in Prāna Fusion will incorporate guidance for applying the bandhas so that you get the hang of them quickly.

That’s all for Prāna Fusion’s nervous system tutorial. I encourage you to practice in the video, and consider purchasing the 4-class pack below. Otherwise, maybe I’ll see you online for a live class.

Either way, thank you going through this process and working on yourself.

Big love,
– Ethan ॐ

P.S. If you want to see this technique in action, head to practice video and use ‘Maha Bandha’ on a pose called “Ricochet.” In it, you’ll push against the wall to strengthen the muscles deep in your chest, traps, and shoulders. It’s amazing.

P.P.S. Occasionally, a huge energetic surge will move through your spine and body doing this practice. I call this a “Kundalini pulse.” If that happens to you, please watch the video on my YouTube channel called ‘What is a Kundalini Awakening, and Why Should You Care?’
